— West Ashley —

The first midcentury era suburb of Charleston developed around the landing of the Ashley River Bridge beginning in the 1920s. West Ashley is bound the Ashley River and Stono River, graced with many waterfront homes and stately residences, as well as neighborhoods of modest cottages and lovely ranch homes. Expansion of West Ashley has also led to many large subdivisions throughout the ensuing decades.

As the growth of Charleston west of the Ashley developed over time, a number of village centers have sprouted. However much of that growth did occur during an era of automobile-centered urban planning, leading to car dependency and poor walkability in some areas. An initiative from the City of Charleston has aimed to reform much of West Ashley by establishing and expanding village centers and pedestrian/bicycle paths with an eye on improving walkability around its many charming neighborhoods.
