Daniel Island

Daniel Island was planned in the early 1990s as something considerably more ambitious than a conventional residential subdivision. Its master plan organized development around a series of neighborhoods and mixed-use centers, with schools, parks, employment, recreation, and waterfront access intended to become part of the same larger community rather than separate destinations.
That planning is still easy to read on the ground. Residential streets generally connect to parks and trails, while different parts of the island contain townhomes, condominiums, traditional single-family houses, and larger waterfront properties. The town center and waterfront districts provide some genuinely useful places to walk for restaurants, services, recreation, and public space, although the island is large enough that walkability depends quite a bit on the particular address.
Daniel Island also has unusually defined access: regional trips funnel primarily through I-526 and the island’s bridge connections. That makes internal location worth considering alongside the house itself. Distance to the town center, schools, trails, waterfront, and the interstate can produce rather different daily routines within a community that otherwise appears remarkably cohesive. The planning may be consistent; the experience is not identical from one end of the island to the other.
