PRIVACY

Your information should remain yours.

Charleston Livability uses information when it has a job: operating the site, remembering something you deliberately save, answering a request, or understanding in broad terms whether the site is working. I do not believe websites should quietly assemble behavioral profiles, sell personal information, or pass detailed browsing histories around simply because the technology makes it possible.

The Internet was built to connect us, not to track us.

Three plain commitments

No advertising profiles

I do not use your activity here to build cross-site behavioral advertising profiles.

No sale of personal information

Personal information is not a side business.

Data has a job

Information should have a specific purpose connected to the service.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT PRIVACY

A website does not need to know everything about you.

The modern web has normalized collecting an extraordinary amount of information about ordinary people doing ordinary things. I don’t think that should be the default.

There are legitimate reasons for a website to remember information. If you create an account, save a home or search, request a showing, subscribe to an email, or ask a question, the site needs enough information to perform that task. Basic measurement can also reveal whether a page is useful or something technical has gone awry.

That is different from quietly following people around the internet, assembling behavioral profiles, enriching them with information from other companies, and monetizing the result. Charleston Livability is a real estate and local information website. It is not an advertising network or a data brokerage.

My preference is simple: collect information when it serves a legitimate purpose for the person using the site, protect it appropriately, and do not invent new uses for it merely because it happens to exist.

Measurement ≠ surveillance

Limited measurement can improve a site without treating every visitor as a profile waiting to be sold.

Formal policy

1. Scope and information you provide

Charleston Livability is a real estate and local information website for the Charleston area. This policy explains the general categories of information that may be collected when you use the site, how it may be used or shared, and how to raise a privacy question.

You may choose to provide your name, email address, phone number, message content, property interests, preferred communities, or other details when you submit a form, send an email, request information or a showing, subscribe to a message, or otherwise contact Charleston Livability. Do not submit sensitive personal information unless it is necessary for your request.

2. Technical information, cookies, and local storage

Like most websites, Charleston Livability may receive basic technical information when you visit, such as browser and device type, referring pages, pages visited, timestamps, approximate network-derived location, and limited interaction events. This information may be processed for operations, troubleshooting, security, and broad measurement.

Cookies and local storage are different. Cookies are small files that a browser stores and sends with requests; local storage keeps information in the browser for site functionality. The site may use either where needed – for example, to remember a listing you want to save before signing in. Their availability and removal depend on the browser and feature involved.

3. Accounts, saved features, inquiries, and listing data

Charleston Livability uses Supabase for authentication and account data. Information connected to Saved Searches, Favorites, alerts, or comparable private features is used to provide those features. Other users cannot browse your private account information.

Information submitted through a real estate inquiry is used to respond to you, provide the requested service, or coordinate with an appropriate professional. Listing data may come from the Charleston Trident MLS and other service providers; user account information is not sent to the MLS as part of ordinary listing display. Bryan is a licensed South Carolina real estate broker and handles inquiries subject to applicable professional requirements.

4. Uses, sharing, and advertising

Information may be used to respond to inquiries, provide requested information, operate requested features, improve the site, troubleshoot errors, protect against abuse, maintain records, measure content performance, and support real-estate-related communication you request. Charleston Livability does not need to collect more information than is useful for those purposes.

Information may be shared with providers that help host the site, manage authentication and account data, deliver email or text messages, process forms, support security, provide analytics, or supply listing data. Those providers may process information as needed to perform their services. Charleston Livability does not sell personal information or use it to build cross-site behavioral advertising profiles.

5. Retention, security, and your choices

Information should be kept only as long as there is a legitimate operational, legal, security, or business reason to keep it. You may contact Charleston Livability to ask about information you previously submitted or request deletion where appropriate.

Charleston Livability uses Supabase for authentication and account data. Passwords are handled by Supabase Auth and are not stored as readable plaintext by Charleston Livability. Supabase uses industry-standard encryption and access controls, but no internet-connected system can promise absolute security.

You may control cookies and local storage through your browser, unsubscribe from messages where an unsubscribe option is provided, and contact Bryan to ask questions or request corrections.

6. Children and changes to this policy

The site is not directed to children under the age specified by applicable law, and it should not knowingly collect personal information from children in violation of that law.

7. Changes to this policy

This policy may change when the site, its tools, its vendors, or applicable requirements change. Material changes should be described plainly near the top of the page with a revised review date.

The standard I intend to keep

New tools will inevitably be added to Charleston Livability. When they are, the question will not simply be whether additional data can be collected. It will be whether collecting it serves a legitimate purpose for the person using the site. If that changes materially, this policy should change plainly enough that any ordinary person can clearly understand what changed.
