Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant is large enough that describing it simply as a Charleston suburb misses much of the point. The town grew outward from a collection of small settlements along Charleston Harbor and Shem Creek, and those older areas still feel noticeably different from the neighborhoods developed farther inland during the town’s rapid growth.
Closer to the harbor, the Old Village, I’On, and neighborhoods around Shem Creek offer established streets, mature trees, and relatively quick access to downtown Charleston and Sullivan’s Island. Farther north, communities such as Park West and Carolina Park reflect a different era of Mount Pleasant: larger planned neighborhoods, newer homes, recreation facilities, schools, and commercial areas designed together rather than accumulated over generations.
In between is a broad mix of conventional subdivisions, waterfront neighborhoods, golf communities, townhomes, and pockets of older housing. Location within Mount Pleasant affects more than the architecture. Bridge access, school assignments, beach traffic, flood exposure, shopping patterns, and the length of an ordinary errand can vary considerably from one end of town to the other. “Mount Pleasant” narrows the map, but not nearly as much as it sounds like it should.
